Welcome to Hot Creek this 10 x 18 mile depression in the earths crust was created about 700,000 years ago.

Tremendous eruptions blasted nearly 50 cubic miles of molten rock from beneath the earths surface. The ground then sank several hundred feet producing the huge depression called a caldera.

In years past many people enjoyed swimming in the main pool at Hot Creek, California. in 2006 things changed. Bursts of hot water and air started to appear so swimming was banned to prevent anyone from getting burned.

We got to chat with Chris Farrar from USGS about the current conditions back then in 2006.
