Mc Gee Creek
(Crowley Lake Basin, Eastern California - Elev. 6700 ft)

Mc Gee Creek is located just over 3 miles north of the Crowley Lake turn off. Look for a grove of aspens and a dirt parking area that can handle 30 cars or so.

Beware this area is cattle grazing land and is also hindered by lots and lots of mud bogs.  Fishing Mc Gee requires at least 6+ hours.  Plan on hiking about 6-7 miles as well.  So this area is for the diehard!  Bring Sunscreen, Food and Water!

The Creek has posted regulations: single barb less lures or flies only and the limit is two fish 18 inches or longer. I recommend you practice Catch & Release in this area.  Bring the camera and then gracefully let your fish back in the creek.

McGee Creek is a narrow water way as it crosses 395 near the parking lot.  As the creek makes it way from the parking area down to Crowley Lake it widens over the three plus mile journey.

This area is a dream come true for a few short weeks every spring.  Each year the cycle is a bit different.

Convict Creek and many little springs feed the creek which is more like a mini river as it nears Crowley Lake

During the spring when we made our visit we still had some fish spawning in the creek.   Many were finished spawning, but you could still see the action happening.

After the hook up the cut throats moved down the creek to a deep hole.   We also hooked in some spent fish as you will also see on the video.

Mc Gee is best fished with a fly rod.   If your into bait this in not your spot.  I would say learn to fly fish it is simple.  Just watch the video and you will be hungry to try.
